Projects for this year included:

1. Kenyan Energy Efficient Stoves – Charcoal Fuel

This supplies local communities with energy efficient stoves and solar ovens in Kenya. The stoves and ovens significantly reduce the amount of fuel that is needed, producing far less carbon emissions that would have otherwise been created.  A total of 149 stoves were offset by Innovia Films.

As the stoves are built locally they provide employment to the area. In addition to the saving in greenhouse gas emissions, the reduced need for firewood leads to a corresponding reduction in the amount of time spent collecting the material, and also helps with a reduction in deforestation, as well as reducing fire risk and respiratory problems. As such, the project has social and financial benefits to the community as well as environmental.

2. Jinshi Hydro Renewable Energy Hydro Power Project

Situated on the Longxi River in the Fuling District of Chonquing City, China, the project has a total installed capacity of 11MW and an annual net electricity generation of 22,725MWh. The electricity generated by the hydro dam will displace energy from the Central China Power Grid, which is primarily supplied with fossil fuel generated power ensuring that genuine greenhouse gas emissions reductions are made.

The measured annual greenhouse gas emissions reductions from the project range between 8,627 - 23,377tCO2e and Innovia Films has bought 1,912.50 tonnes.

In addition to the environmental benefits of reduced fossil fuel combustion, the project has also made positive contributions to sustainable development in the area by alleviating the power shortage in Changshou district, boosting social and economic development of local minority areas including the creation of 20 permanent jobs during the operational life of the plant and also reduces pressure on local vegetation as the collection of firewood reduces.
