Biodegradable Bags in Big Demand
Date: 13 December 2004
Colourful, printed, biodegradable and compostable bags are proving to be a “sales success” for German manufacturer Schmidt Verpackungsfolien.Customers ranging from major hypermarkets to small independent bakeries are using the bags to pack a wide selection of speciality and organic produce.
The block bottom bags are made from NatureFlex
™ from Innovia Films and are supplied flexo printed in up to six colours.
NatureFlex™, which is manufactured from renewable wood pulp is certified to both EU (EN 13432:2000) and American (ASTM D6400-99) composting norms and is proven in both commercial and home composting systems.
The film is inherently anti-static, glossy and transparent with a naturally high gas barrier and resistance to greases, oils and fats.
NatureFlex NP, which is the grade used by Schmidt, also has superb deadfold properties which makes it ideal for hand-filled bags which can be closed easily by twisting the film on itself or folding the top of the bag over.
These films are also especially suitable for bag-making because their high moisture absorption characteristics facilitate fast drying for water-based glues.
Schmidt Sales Manager Guido Jonas says: “The machine performance of NatureFlex is excellent. Demand for bags made from this material is increasing all the time. It offers many advantages over competitive materials, especially for organic produce.”
NatureFlex bags are currently being used for packing organic fruit and vegetables, baked goods, muesli, spices and teas. They are also ideal for selections of novelty or seasonal products.
Innovia Films was established on 1st October, 2004 following the acquisition of the UCB films business by a consortium led by Chairman Dennis Matthewman and Candover Partners Ltd
The company is a leading global producer of speciality Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) and Cellulose films with production sites in the UK, USA, Belgium and Australia.
