Celloplus™ Packs Keep Seasonings Sweet

Date: 5 June 2006

Spice-blenders, Boarding House Seasonings, is using a unique packaging film from Innovia Films Inc to keep its aromatic products in first class condition.

The California-based company has enjoyed an up-swing in demand since launching its internet sales site (www.boardinghouseseasonings.com) three years ago and now ships product worldwide.

Seasoning blends, some of which were first devised by the company in the 1950’s, include those specifically for beef, pork, fish, poultry or loafs, barbeque sauces and marinades and rubs for lamb, goat, venison and game.

Owner, Russell Bradley says the integrity of each packet of spices is crucial, especially as different blends are often shipped together.

“We know we’ve got the packaging right,” he explains, “because when you open up the box you cannot smell the product. That’s the simple test to ensure we have the right strength of vapor barrier and strong seals so that there is no cross-contamination between packs and no loss of flavor.”

CelloPlus™ is a complex construction of PVdC barrier coated Cellophane with a central polymer core.

The Cellophane in the structure provides an excellent barrier to gases and aromas while the core layer acts as a barrier to moisture making CelloPlus ideal for packing delicate products like spices.
Boarding House Seasonings uses the transparent CelloPlus™ T, but a metallised version is also available.

The film not only excels in product protection but also runs well on packaging machines.

Adds Russell Bradley: “CelloPlus™ is anti-static which is really important to us. Static would be a real problem not only for the smooth running of our packing lines but also because of product clinging to the packaging.

“Without question, CelloPlus™ works for us at all levels.”

In addition to being anti-static, CelloPlus™ is resistant to acids, salts and a barrier to oils and greases. It is heat sealable on both sides, receptive to inks, adhesives and tear tapes, and is sufficiently robust to avoid being punctured by sharp product edges.

CelloPlus™ has been developed for a wide range of applications requiring high moisture and gas barrier. It has properties that compare favorably with classical laminations. Generally used as a single film for medium to large packs on vertical or horizontal form-fill-seal machines, it is especially suitable for the packaging of snack foods, dried foods, nuts and coffee. One side jaw release assures excellent performance on high speed, high temperature packaging applications.

It is also widely used for high quality bag making applications. Its deadfold and rigidity make it ideal for block bottom bags.
