Glossy Film Laminate Protects Delicate Bars

Date: 15 November 2004

A unique UV laminated film is being used for added protection and improved pack appearance on one of the UK’s oldest and best known confectionery products.

Kendal Mint Cake has been manufactured by J.E. Wilson & Sons in the Lake District since 1913.

The blocks of hard sugar fondant, some covered in chocolate, are especially popular with walkers and athletes because of their high energy value. However, they break easily and the company wanted to give them some additional protection.

Preston-based confectionery film converters, Sabre Triad devised a solution using its in-line UV lamination system to combine two Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) films from Innovia Films.

Propafilm™ RB30, is a high gloss white film which is printed by Sabre Triad prior to over lamination to clear Propafilm™ RGP20. Sandwiching the print between the two films protects it and gives an exceptionally high glossy finish to the packs.

Sabre Triad uses a one-step quick curing catatonic UV adhesive which gives outstanding clarity while the combination of the two films provides a high barrier to moisture and UV transmission. Both are puncture and impact resistant and heat sealable.

Says J.E. Wilson Packaging Buyer and Director, Felicity Wilson:  “The thickness of the laminate strengthens the bars and the packs work brilliantly. The new glossy film really lifts the pack design and we are delighted with the results.”

Sabre Triad has two in-line UV lamination stations on its narrow web printing presses, Technical Services Manager, Chris Chamberlain explains: “This type of laminated film is becoming more and more popular especially for products at the premium end of the market which demand really good looking packaging.”
