New Propaream™ Excels for Paper Wrapping

A new coated cavitated white biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film from Innovia Films is proving a resounding success for Italian ream paper producer, Finpaper S.p.A.Propaream™ T710W is the latest addition to the Propaream™ range, developed specifically with Finpaper SpA for their high quality cut size paper industry in response to the market requirements for different looks on the paper overwrapping applications.
The film is produced by the advanced bubble technology characteristic of Innovia Films, and differentiated by its white opaque appearance and different touch. The presence of cavitation in the structure provides yield advantages over other films, in line with its reduced density.
Finpaper Director Srečko Štrukelj says switching to Propaream™ T710W represents a 50% saving in packaging weight – from 22 grams per wrapped A4 ream to 11 grams. Less weight means less cost and less waste.
Another significant advantage to using Propaream™, he adds, is that it is recyclable unlike the more commonly used packaging which combines paper and polythene (PE).
He says: “This is especially significant when you consider that paper consumption in the European community currently stands at some 1 billion reams of photocopier paper each year which equates to 22,000 tons of unreyclable waste packaging.
“Propaream™ could halve the amount of packaging and can be recycled which is even more important when you take into account forecasts of 70% increase in paper consumption in the next 15 years.”
Propaream™ T710W also benefits from Innovia Films’ proprietary acrylic-coating, an established technology which has been been proven in the company’s transparent Propaream™ T710 grades.
This coating provides a very wide sealing range ensuring a large operating window even at high speeds. Sealability also means that no glues are required for a cleaner packing operation and reduced risks of contamination.
As well as shelf appeal and performance, Propaream™ T710W provides Finpaper with excellent product protection.
Mr Štrukelj says: “It is vital that paper is protected from humidity, light and changes in temperature and Propaream™ performs very well in this respect. It has excellent sealing, is easy to handle, even at speeds of up to 80 reams a minute and gives us very good utilisation on our converting plant for all pack sizes.”
Because Propaream™ T710W is manufactured using the “bubble” production process its orientation is balanced which means enhanced flatness for optimum film feed and excellent deadfold for a tight wrap and clean, easy cutting.
Mr Štrukelj is also pleased with the printability of the new film, he adds: “The film has very good visual properties, it is glossy, it feels nice to the touch and it carries print very well indeed.”
