Organic Brownies to be Wrapped in Biodegradable Film

Date: 21 March 2005

ATLANTA, GA March, 2004 ― Organic health food producer, Raw Indulgence is using a unique biodegradable and compostable packaging film for its Heavenly Whole Food Brownies and Blondies range.

NatureFlex™ film from Innovia Films (formerly UCB Films) is a biodegradable, cellulose-based film derived from wood pulp which is certified to the ASTM D6400 standard for compostable packaging, and can therefore carry the compostable logo issued by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI).

New York-based Raw Indulgence chose to use the film to flow-wrap its range of vegan Brownies because, according to President, Alice Benedetto, it is consistent with the ethos of the product.

In addition to which the crystal clear film, she says, looks good on the pack and is easy to use.

“We tried out a number of different packaging films but NatureFlex™ was by far the best. It answers our environmental concerns and it performs really well,” she adds.

The Heavenly Brownies collection of five different flavored fruit and nut-based bars is currently being sold by health food stores across the U.S. and market penetration is growing rapidly.

NatureFlex™ can be used in a wide range of applications including flow-wrap, form fill and seal, twist-wrap and for bag-making.

It is very glossy, transparent and engineered to make it a trouble-free, easy-to-use and efficient packaging film that has the added advantages of being anti-static and heat resistant, with excellent dead-fold and heat sealability. NatureFlex™ offers outstanding packing line performance because of an extremely wide heat sealing range of 160ºF to 390ºF that allows an improvement in line speeds with no loss of seal performance.

The films offer a variety of properties that provide ideal conditions for a broad cross-section of packaged goods, according to Applications Development Manager for Innovia Films, Malcolm Cohn.

He says: “The moisture transmission and barrier properties of the different films in the NatureFlex™ product line are controlled by using specially formulated coatings which allow the film to be custom tailored to meet certain products’ barrier needs.”

“Natural organic products is a high-growth market in the U.S.,” he adds. “NatureFlex™ is an environmentally-friendly packaging film that makes an attractive choice for packaging and promoting natural and organic products.

“Consumer awareness of the source reduction and recyclability issues associated with food packaging is increasing in the American market.  People are concerned about the impact of packaging on the environment.”

Innovia Films was established on October 1, 2004 following the acquisition of the former films business of the UCB Group by a consortium led by Chairman, Dennis Matthewman and Candover Partners Ltd.

The company is a leading global producer of specialty Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) and cellulose films with production sites in the USA, UK, Belgium and Australia.
