In Mould Labelling

In Mould labelling is a technique that gives a moulded plastic item complex, high resolution graphics, that form an integral part of the container or product.

This is accomplished by a pre-printed filmic material being incorporated into the mould as the container is formed.  Unlike other labelling processes the label can not be separated from the polymer host.  This makes In Mould labelling ideally suited to harsh environments where traditional labels can often look worn and unattractive during the life of the labelled component.  Very often resistance to this type of failure can be an essential legal prerequisite for many items, for example, Health and Safety instructions.

In addition, because the labelling operation takes place as the component is manufactured, there is no need for a separate labelling operation.  Thus reducing the complexity in the overall supply chain.

The In Mould technique also offers the capability of five side labelling of pots and tubs.  Something that is extremely costly via other processes.

The manufacture of plastic containers and components applicable to In Mould labelling broadly subdivides into injection moulding which is used for the production of tubs, cups and buckets and blow moulding used for the production of bottles.  These moulding processes have very different characteristics and as such, the films required for each operation are very different.
