Innovia Films has developed a unique polymer substrate for the banknote and securities markets which, following a specialized process, may be printed using existing security printing equipment and inks. Innovia Films is a joint venture partner with the Reserve Bank of Australia in Securency Pty Ltd, which manufactures and markets a number of high security polymer substrates: Guardian® for banknotes; Sentinel® for government security documents and Sentri® for ID cards. These unique high-tech polymer technologies aggressively challenge the counterfeiting threat.
In the banknote field Guardian® offers much greater durability than traditional substrates and has been used by 24 national note issuing banks. Security is provided through the use of transparent windows and a wide range of other highly innovative security features. In countries where polymer banknotes have been introduced, counterfeit incidence has reduced by more than 90%. Polymer notes have a high tear strength, they are non porous, non fibrous and impervious to water and other liquids. As a result they resist soiling and have proved to last up to four to five times longer than conventional paper banknotes. Another benefit is that they can be recycled into other useful products at the end of their circulation life.
